Un Siripinil (Gautami Rao)

Un Siripinil, is a song that caught my attention recently (altho I have heard it numerous times before), when I was watching the movie Patchai Kili Muthu Charam...A song that I could better relate to..in the context of the movie.

Wonderfully sung, easy flowing, a great job by Gautami Rao for a maiden song!

My attempt at it is here below, do let me know how well I fared!

Oru Iniya Manadhu (Jency)

Nearly 5 months after, managed to record this evergreen tamil song, composed by IR and sung by Jency.

Song: Oru Iniya Manadhu
Movie: Johnny

All songs in Johnny were a great hit! One other song that I am hoping to sing, if I could get a hold of the Karaoke is "Aasaya Kathula". If any of you have or know where I can get a hold of that ktrack, please let me know.

Took me just a few hours of recording and mixing for this one, so hope it meets the expectations for you to enjoy this rendition!!

Yeh Mera Dil - Sunidhi Chauhan (Don 2006)

Paras and Vishal requested me to sing more Hindi songs...so here is my latest cover song, a fast foot tapping number from the movie Don sung by Sunidhi Chauhan.

Sunidhi Chauhan is my personal favorite, her voice is part rustic, part nasal, bit husky! Very difficult to copy her style and attitude for most of her songs needs a good amount of both.

Do listen to my attempt and let me know if I match any of her singing attributes.

Kannan Vandu Padugindran - S. Janaki

Old time favorite of mine...remember seeing this song in Doordarshan (those good old days!) during "Oliyum Oliyum", actress Radhika standing on a stage and singing this song with the mic in this movie...I used to imagine myself in her place singing that song on a stage...

Tho there is no physical stage, I got the opportunity to sing that song here today and upload it for my virutal stage audience and listeners.

Please let me know how it sounds..took me exactly 45 minutes to sing, record, mix and upload (one of my record time recordings!!)

Song: Kannan Vandhu Padugindran

Original Singer: S. Janaki

Ninaithu Ninaithu Paarthaal - Shreya Ghoshal

9/14 - Uploaded a new version with better Ktrack in background..thanks to TC Neha!!
==================================================================================

I have been wanting to sing a song by Shreya for a very long time and finally managed one not so complex a song....in the long list that I want to sing of her songs is Naare from Guru, Yeh Ishq from Jab We Met, Jane Dona from Cheeni Kum, a tamil serial title song Mekala, and it goes on......

Melody of a song...one can easily feel the tears streaming down as you listen and sing this song....so much sadness and pathos filled to the brim....

Obviously my version won't be as good, especially since the ktrack was not so great (blame it on Ktrack...right?!), high notes were not easy either, so do listen and give me your feedback so that I can redo the parts where its off base...

Song: Ninaithu Ninaithu Paarthal

Kuzhaloodum Kannanukku - K S Chitra

After singing Hindi and English songs wanted to get back to native land...Been wanting to sing this song for a Verrrrry long time...FINALLY...

Such a melody composition by M.S.Viswanathan and Ilayaraja...rare combo...sung mellifluously by Chitraji...All songs in this movie are a super hit...

Recently Ilayaraja redid this song in Hindi for "Cheeni Kum" - "Baatein Hawaein" sung by Shreya Ghoshal. If I get the Ktrack for that song, will definitely try to sing that version too..so if you happen to know where I can get the Hindi Ktrack, pl let me know.

Song: Kuzhaloodum Kannanukku
Movie: Mella Thirandhadu Kadavu
Originally Sung by: K.S.Chitra

I felt that the rendition sounded better with headphones on vs on a speaker..but taking the step to post it..let me know if there are any glitches, and I will redo...

As always..thanks for listening and encouraging!!

♫ Musical Extravaganza......♫

Last sunday, September 30th, I went to a Concert in New Jersey with my family...Musical Extravaganza where Sadhana Sargam, UnniKrishnan, Karthik and Ganga were singers....The event was advertised by www.dhoomfm.com as "Musical Extravaganza", where the four singers were to sing songs from Tamil, Hindi and Telugu movies.

The week before, I helped in gathering trivia and songs on all the four singers for a special show that Venky hosted on DhoomFM, and that gave me a lot of insight into these singers. Thanks to Venky for sharing the pictures with me.

The experience we had at the concert was OUT OF THE WORLD!!!

The show started with Ganga singing IR composition "Ooru Sanam" - what a sweet voice! She is a good example of talent underutilized in the Indian Music Industry. She could sing every singer's songs with ease and effortlessness.

Then came UnniKrishnan. The image that we have usually of Unni Krishnan, is that of a very conservative, classical style singer...but he proved otherwise in this concert!!! He sang his popular Jeans number - Hai Re Hai Re in tamil. He ensured that the audience were not left alone. He jumped out of the stage, came over to the audience and made us all sing the chorus for that song...THAT was something I least expected from Unni Krishnan!

Sadhana Sargam, just as sweet as her voice, sang "Snehithane" from Alaipayuthey, and ofcourse the song that won her National Award under IR composition "Paatu Solli".

Karthik, - WOW...what a stage presence and what energy levels...the guy is unbelievable on stage!!! He kept referring to peppy numbers as "kick ass" numbers and sang "Karu Karu Vizhigalal" from Pachai Kili Muthu charam as well as "Girlfriend venum" song with vigor and enthu. Much awaited, Oru Malai from Ghajini came much later and he started his rendition with a song that he said "changed his life" - "Sakthi Kodu" from Baba. His voice is divine. Such control and strength in this singing....hats off Karthik!!

Then there were a bunch of songs mostly in Tamil and we had folks dancing on stage and having a gala time.

The added bonus and least expected surprise was that Solo Drum player "Siva Mani" was in town and so was SPB Charan. They both made it to the show as audience but little could they resist being on the other side of the stage.

We had an impromptu "Mirdhangam converted to Drum" version of beats by Mr. Siva Mani and SPB Charan's "Nagila Nagila" rendition. They had the audience thrilled and jumping for more!!!

Final song for the audience, was "Mustafa Mustafa" and we had most people joining the singers on stage...

One unforgettable event...we went home feeling very relaxed, with a feeling of enjoyment and stresslessness, wishing more such events happen in the near future!!

My Favorite Tamil songs of 2006 - Part II

Continuing my earlier post on my favorite Tamil songs of 2006, I selected the ones below based on how often I listened and enjoyed these songs on my ipod last year.

1)
Song: Unakaaga Thaane
Movie: Nenjil Jil Jil
Singers: Unnikrishnan and Sujatha Mohan (Corrected after Singer Sujatha Mohan's comment)
Music Director: Imaan
What do I like: The beats are excellent. Chorus is good. The mix of hindustani classical "Dhirana Dhirana" and melodious "Devathai pola vandu"....tho I simply cant bear the nasal ending that Unni Krishnan has given to this song.

NenjilJilJil_Unakk...

2)
Song: Kanavaa Kaanala
Movie: Jerry
Singers: Sujatha Mohan (Corrected after Singer Sujatha Mohan's comment)
Music Director: Ramesh Vinayagam
What do I like: The opera kinda start adds interest to the song. Again the beats are awesome. Needless to say Sujatha's expression in the song is excellent. The way the song changes in first and second stanza ending is different. "vaa namellam pogalam vanellam, vaazh naalellam thenila aagalam".

Jerry_KanavaaKaana...

3)
Song: Nachathira paravaikku
Movie: Paramasivan
Singers: Tippu, Rajalakshmi & Chorus
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like: Reminds me of a nice kids group song due to the chorus. But the content of the song is very romance oriented..."Sitradai kaviyame siragulla oviyame enai nee nee vilagadhe"..generally a fast song that wakes up anyone.

Paramasivan_Natcha...

4)
Song: Hitler Penne
Movie: Poi
Singers: Tippu, Sujatha
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like: The rhythm and the melody in this song is just excellent...lyrics are fine but its interesting the way it fits in the song.."Nila thozhan neeya kala rasigan neeya..ore medai aanalum I dont love you".."Jannal ora kaatrum jaadi poovin vaasam"..Sujatha and Tippu have literally honeyed the song over..

Poi_HitlerPenne.mp...

5)
Song: Summa Kedantha
Movie: Thambi
Singers: Karthik and Kalyani
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like: Very villagey song, the picturisation of the song also is nicely slow motioned with the tune. Both Kalyani and Karthik have done justice to the song with very good expression at key points. The pace fastens a little for few lyrics in the middle "Nethi pottu kaari nerungi vaa pakkama"...overall a nice and a diff melody

Thambi_SummaKidant...

6)
Song: Lelakku Lelakku
Movie: Aadhi
Singers: Kay Kay & Sujatha
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like:
Its a very different song. The song starts with meaningless Lelakku Lelakku, and goes on to have some English chorus, but the core music and lyrics is so applicable to everyone at every stage in life! "Inbam oru kaalam, varum thunbam oru kaalam, adhai etru kondu ponal manam eppodum paaadum", "varum sogam oru megam adhu sollamale pogum, andha sandhosham thaan vaanam"

Dhoom Machale - Sunidhi Chauhan

After a long break, coming back with a DHOOM. I meant the song, one of my personal favorites becos of the beats and melody mixed in this song...

Sunidhi Chauhan, a versatile singer whose other renditions like Dekh Le and Beedi are very popular. Would love to sing one of the few melodies sung by her in Fanaa - Dekho Na..

I have been working on this song since Feb 21st when I got hold of this Karaoke (Thanks to Taraana.com& Vishal). Finished recording it almost two months back but just got the chance to finish up with the Mixing becos of all the special effects on this song.

I have experimented a lot with the ECHO features of the software to ensure that the effects are close to original version, though my rendition may be way off :)

As always, your comments and constructive feedback are most welcome!

I will be posting Part II of the fav list soon but for now, enjoy listening to this rendition and let me know your comments.

My favorite tamil songs of 2006 - Part 1

Friends - My apologies for not being able to post any songs off late. I have been feeling under the weather and it will be sometime before I can get enough strength to sing any songs.

Meanwhile, I thought of sharing my favorite (less popular) tamil songs of 2006 which in my opinion, did not make it to most of the top songs list of 2006. I have consciously not listed the very popular songs from SOK, VV, etc. I happened to listen to my ipod's Top 25 most played and found out these in no particular order. Will be posting them in sets of 5 over the next few weeks.

If you have not heard these songs before, you can listen to these songs by clicking on the e-snips links below:

1)
Song: Kadhal thaana idhu kadhal thana
Movie: Nenjil Jil Jil
Singers: Kay Kay and Chitra Sivaraman
Music Director: Imaan
What do I like: Expressive vocals by the female singer, esp in the lines "Ayyo sagikaliye" and the overall peppy tune of the song.

NenjilJilJil_Katha...

2)
Song: Koli kundu kannu
Movie: Emtan Mahan
Singers: Karthik and Kalyani
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like: The tune suits the village theme of the movie, Kalyani has sung well in many parts "maasa kadsiya yen enna odukura" and Karthik needs no mention. He's sung wonderfully as usual.

EmtanMagan_Koligun...

3)
Song: Un paarvayil paithiyam aanen
Movie: Something Something Unakkum Enakum
Singers: Karthik and Sumangali
Music Director: Devisri Prasad
What do I like: The movie kinda influenced my liking this song. The movie is a remake, according to me, of Maine Pyar Kiya in Hindi. The chorus "la la lai lai lai lai lai" is jumpy, and the main song is quite a melody.

Something Somethin...

4)
Song: Poi solla poren
Movie: Thiruttu Payale
Singers: Kay Kay and Kanmani
Music Director: Bharadwaj
What do I like: Kanmani's expressive laugh, dialogues, lyrics of the song esp where it goes "Otha maanga nee dhaane, uppu kallu naan dhaane, orasiye thinnaal enna?
Kaatukathir nee dhaane, thattuchittu naan dhaane, kothi kothi thinnaal enna?" and also "udal enbadai naam marandhu vittu uravugal kondal enna"...

ThiruttuPayale_Poi...

5)
Song: Ennai konja konja
Movie: Aathi
Singers: Hariharan and Sujatha
Music Director: Vidyasagar
What do I like: This song puts anybody who is in a dull and sulky mood into a dance mood. Very inspiring song, esp for those who enjoy rain. Good mix of classical and film music tunes.

Paatu Solli - Sadhana Sargam

Sadhana Sargam, one of the top singers of Bollywood, started singing in Tamil industry for ARR to begin with. From then on she has been a singer quite familiar in Tamil music industry.

There is a general complaint from tamil folks that the pronunciation of Tamil words by Bollywood singers is horrible in tamil songs...Well...its debatable when there are many tamil folks themselves who can do better in their pronunciation of "Zha" sound!

The effort Sadhana Sargam has made to sing this song in Tamil, is appreciable.

I have consciously sung the song with proper pronunciations....not copying Sadhana Sargam's in her rendition for Ilayaraja from the movie Azhagi.

Song: Paatu Solli
Singer: Sadhana Sargam
Movie: Azhagi

Enjoy listening and your feedback keeps me going...

Paakathe Paakathe - Minmini

Minmini became overnight popular singer with "Chinna Chinna Aasai" song in Roja (Dil hai chotta sa song in Hindi).

I have sung a less popular song of hers from the movie "Gentleman".This was a very easy song to render.

Inspired by Vishal's rendition of Bhool Ja, where Vishal has done a wonderful job by taking pains to record the chorus lines in multiple tracks and in different pitches, I wanted to try something similar.

But I did not take so much pain to record in different pitch in this song...just used a separate track with "Chorus Effect" in the software, along with my main track rendition.

Appreciate your feedback (good and bad) to improvise in the next rendition..

Song: Paakathe Paakathe

Poove Poochoodava - K.S.Chitra

Another one of Chitra's mellifluous songs....after Chitra sung "Chinna Kuyil Paadum" for this movie, she became "Chinna Kuyil Chitra" for the tamil music industry.

This is the title song from Poove Poochoodava...

How Do I Live Without You - Trisha Yearwood

An english song post...I was inspired to learn more English songs after the feedback on my earlier ones here(Shania Twain).

Found this song in my collection and just happen to hear it while on train, and thought why not this song?! Been listening to it for almost a month now to get closer to the emotions, lyrics, tune and accent.

I don't know if I have done justice to the song...so please let me know what you think about this rendition.

Kaatrinile Varum Geetham - M S Subbulakshmi

When I started audioblogging, my first cousin in California, asked me if I could sing this song by MS. I always knew this song as a melody that I have heard my mother sing when I was young.

But when I did hear this song to practice it completely, I realized that this song has many nuances that only a classical singer like MS Subbulakshmi could have done justice to.

There isn't a music fan alive who hasn't heard of M.S.Subbulakshmi, or MS, as she is popularly known. She gave her first recital at the tender age of 10, when she was asked to sing at the wedding of a Saurashtra friend of the family in Madurai.

Her seeming effortlessness of her music is rooted in technical mastery, ceaseless practice, restraint and constant self apprisal. Though she is over 80, she can still hit the gandhara of the upper register and make you soar with her. Such fidelity to the pitch and resonance are the result of breath control, perfect diction and phenomenal concentration. No other artiste has been as successful in blending the intutive and the reflective elements of art.

MS is the first woman recipient of the 'Sangita Kalanidhi' title and the first one to popularise Carnatic music in North India and in the West at prestigious venues (Edinburgh Festival and the UN). Her admirers are from all walks of life - national and international leaders, fellow artistes and other celebrities. On one celebrated occasion, Mahatma Gandhi requested her to sing his favourite bhajan for him.

MS has won many awards and accolades. The latest in the long line is the Bharat Ratna, India's highest award to its citizen. Unfortunately, we lost this unmatchable singer in December 2004.

Here is my version of that song.

Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein - Alka Yagnik

Honey voiced Alka Yagnik has been my favorite singer since Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak & Tezaab days. She has the beauty in her voice that is unmatchable. I have tried her song from Raja Hindustani here.

Alka is classically trained, and has been one of the leading playback singers in Bollywood since the late 1980's. Alka began singing bhajans for Calcutta Radio at the age of six. She came to Mumbai and sang for the film Laawaris (1981) with the song Mere Angene Mein. She got her big break with the song Ek Do Teen from the film Tezaab (1988). The song turned her into a star overnight and went on to become a pop hit. She also received her first Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song.

I cannot do justice to her voice but I have tried....I sure could have done better...as always!

Maalayil Yaaro - Swarnalatha

Here is another versatile singer from the south, Swarnalatha.

Swarnalatha's voice is very different from her peer female singers..and she definitely stood out because of that!

Her songs, Aaatama Therotama, Povoma Oorkolam, Ennule Ennule, Rakkama are some of the super hits...Latest rendition of hers is in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal - Kummi Adi..what a song!

I have tried my voice on her very popular song, Maalayil Yaaro, one of my personal favorites.

Enjoy listening and leave your comments for me to improvise.

Alayamaniyin Oosaiyai - P. Susheela

My humble attempt at a song by P Susheela, the legend in film music industry. There are so many songs of P.Susheela that I would have loved to sing, this song is one of the first in the list.

'Petra Thaai' movie made in 1952 in Tamil (Kanna Thalli in Telugu) with A. Nageswararao and G. Varalakshmi in lead roles, is the movie that P Susheela sang her first song - a duet with A. M. Raja - 'Edhukku azhaithaai' for the movie.

The songs that she sung in 'Kanavane kan kanda dheiyvam' (1955) brought her the popularity that she so well deserved. Especially songs like 'Endhan ullam thulli vilyaaduvadhum,' 'unnaik kan thedudhe' brought out her talent for rendition. Then came 'Missiyamma' in the same year. Susheela became very popular with 'Brindha vanamum Nandha kumaranum' and 'ariyaa paruvamada' set to Karaharapriya.
If you are interested in P Susheela's history, check out this website

One of my personal favorites of P Susheela's is Oru Naal Yaaro from Major Chandrakanth. Will try to sing that next, if I get hold of the Karaoke.

Karupputhaan Enakku Pudhicha -Anuradha Sriram

Here is another singer who has become very popular in a short time in Indian film music space.

Though her first song was "Malrodu" in Bombay, her "Nalam Nalam ariya aaval" in Kadhal Kottai was a big hit. So was the song in Aasai "Meenamma"

The song that I have sung here is Karupputhaan enakku pudicha coloru, song from the movie VettriKodi Kattu. This song was a hit too for not just the music but also the lyrics...

Enjoy listening...

Yeh zindagi Usi ki hai - Lata Mangeshkar

So here I am completing my first month of audioblogging (successfully??!!!)

As the first month anniversary day, I am dedicating this song to my mom, who has been asking me to sing this song ever since I started blogging a month back.

I did not have the Karaoke, so I have put bits of music, in between, hoping it will not spoil the beauty of the song. I did this just to ensure that I was singing at the same pitch as the original.

Arriyathe Arriyathe (Maiden Malayalam song)

UPDATED ON DEC-17:
Updated the song with a new recording.
========================================================
While in stream of singing songs of different singers, I thought of trying a song in Malayalam by singer Sujatha, but I had a huge challenge of firstly knowing what solo songs were sung by singer Sujatha, then I had to look for a place online that could let me buy/download karaoke for that song and also find the original to practice.

A song that was an answer to all the above challenges was "Arriyathe Arriyathe" from the movie Ravanaprabhu sung by KS Chitra.

This song is dedicated to all my hostelmates and chechis who helped me speak and learn Malayalam during my stay in Kerala.

Forever and Always (Shania Twain - My choice)

The response for the first attempt at the english song that I sang, was very encouraging. So decided to try another one of my favorite english song (Shania Twain again). This does not fall into my "trying songs by all female singers" agenda...but too good a song to let go.

Again, matching the accent has been a challenge in this song and I have tried to just sing it the way I wanted than copy Shania's accent.

Kutti Kutti Kavidhai Naane - Pop Shalini

Just before I lost the recording software, I managed to record this very new song called "Kutti Kutti Kavidhai naane" from the movie "Poi" which is yet to be released. This is K Balachandar's 101st directorial movie.

This movie has very nice songs esp. "Poi solla poren"

Pop Shalini is a very versatile singer and had made it into the V Channel's VIVA competition but unfortunately did not win the award.

Song: Kutti Kutti Kavidhai
Movie: Poi (yet to be released)
Singer: Pop Shalini

Bahut Pyar Karte Hain - Anuradha Paudwal

***UPDATE (DEC 3rd): I bought my recording software and tweaked the volume and the starting of this song...so please listen to it again ***

=======================
One of my favorite singers, who has sung lovely numbers in Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Lal Dupatta Mal Mal Ka etc.

This song is from Saajan and I managed to get the instrumental, and not a karaoke.
So my voice is at a higher volume to overshadow the instrumental tune. I need to reduce the volume but unfortunately my laptop has crashed and I do not have the recording software (trial version) anymore ...so changes have to wait till I get hold of one.

WARNING: Put the volume a little on the lower end when listening to this one.

Enjoy listening...and leave your comments for me to improvise.

Kaatril Endan Geetham - S. Janaki

There was a dilemma whether to sing "Oru sanam" from S.Janaki's songs (since that has a lot of emotions or to sing Kaatril Endan Geetham). The decision was kinda easy cos I did not have the karaoke track for Oru Sanam.

One of the toughest songs. The pitch at which Janakiamma has sung this song is unbelievable.

I have tried my best....rest is for you folks to tell.

Song: Kaatril Endan Geetham
Movie: Johnny

Yamunai Atrile - Mithali

One of the voices and songs that caught me when the movie Thalapathi was released (it was the year 1991 for Diwali).

Excellent song rendered beautifully by Mithali and Chorus (I have sung the solo version here since this one is without most of the music!)

Song: Yamunai Atrile
Singer: Mithali

Yaad piya ki -Falguni Pathak

After testing the waters with easy Vaseegara, ondra renda,a first attempt at an English song (which many listeners liked!), and then a pop one (Baat Ban jaye), to Carnatic (Alaipayuthey), I am now planning to try the songs of many different female singers (with minimal repetition - limited to the availability of Karaoke tracks!).

Started with KS Chitra yesterday

Now its Falguni Pathak.

Enjoy listening

Alaipayuthe -Harini

As I said, I wanted to test the kind of songs that I can sing and the natural next attempt is at a carnatic song from the movie Alaipayuthe...

If rest of the songs were a breeze to learn and record, this song took me nearly 5 hours to learn and record cos inevitably I goofed up in some place during recording and had to rerecord like 22 times...so much for my versatality...:-)

I really feel that I should have taken some classical music lessons after this struggle...better late than never so may be soon??

As always, please leave your comments.

You're still the one - Shania Twain

Today I wanted to test the versatility in my voice ....so I attempted to record one of my favourite english songs by Shania Twain "Youre still the one".

Does not sound great ...but it is for you folks to tell me if I sound too desi in this song...

Aap Jaisa Koi Meri - Nazia Hussain

Updated with new version on Jan 21 '07

My experiment with "the software"

Now that I have this fabulous software (for only 30 days though!), I wanted to experiment with the features.

Had the sound track for Baat Ban Jaye (aap jaisa koi meri..wonderful rendition by Nazia Hassan)
The song has a special chorus effect, which is hard to replicate without a sophisticated mixing software like the one that I am trying now....so I thot why not try that song....

Listen to it below... and leave your comments for me so that I can improvise.

Ondra Renda -Bombay Jayashree

Second posting this week...this time with a much better recording...

But sounds better than the one before.... but a long way to go

Here's Ondra Renda from Kaakha Kaakha...

AUDIO BLOGGING..(Vaseegara)

Came across audioblogging just two weeks back (thanks to my friend and college batchmate - Preethy (http://swathwam.blogspot.com), who introduced me to her involvement with www.blogswara.com) and it caught me by waves....

Its incredible that these folks who created this album have not met one another and the entire album creation process has happened via emails, completely remote.

Pushed me listen to other audio blogs and inspired me to put up my recordings online.

The first one is recorded without any sophisticated microphone or recording software. Just my laptop's built in mic and a freeware recording software that kept jumping the tracks....but neverthless...first try...

Leave your feedback please...
